A Tingle of Hope For a Cure
It's spring and hope is in the air for people with type 1 diabetes. A new clinical trial based on the work of Dr. Denise Faustman has just commenced.
Seven years ago, Dr. Faustman discovered that she could cure diabetes in mice. She injected a vaccine, BCG, and it knocked out the t-cells that were continuously attacking the pancreas. To her surprise, insulin-producing cells spontaneously regrew in one third of the mice. The mice were cured!
You can read about Dr. Faustman's history on Wikibetes or check out this Newsweek article. The new, human study is currently recruiting patients. Although this is a small step towards a bona fide cure, it is cause for optimism.
Do you have questions about the study? Elizabeth and I will be doing a podcast with Dr. Faustman this May! You can suggest questions for us to ask on our blog or in the forum.
